SAFMARINE ZAMBEZI will join the seven-strong fleet on the weekly named-day America Express service between southern Africa and North America on September 3.
The service is operated by partner lines Safmarine, Maersk Sealand and Mediterranean Shipping Company.
The new vessel replaces the Safmarine Maluti.
"Together with our partner lines, we have enhanced the reliability, transit times and port coverage offered by the service," said Alex de Bruyn, Safmarine's African trades executive.
New design permits stowage in the ship's holds of containers of excess height or different sizes or both, and there is the possibility of connecting about 700 reefer containers. Hazardous cargoes may be stowed either on deck or in the ship's holds.
The 2 500 TEU vessel is on long-term charter to the line.
