Egg producers in eThekwini have been urged to register their businesses on the agribusiness database before July 16 to access market opportunities, according to a statement released by the eThekwini municipality.
This comes as the Cottonlands Egg Hub in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, is nearing completion and is preparing to start full operation this month.
It is a private-public partnership set to benefit local egg producers with market access through contract growing opportunities.
Quoted in the statement, deputy head of the city’s Agri-Business Department, Vuyo Jayiya, said that the egg hub was a developmental programme to develop emerging chicken egg producers through an anchor farm model.
“The Cottonlands Egg Hub (anchor farm) is planned to produce 80 000 eggs per day and subcontract emerging growers to supply eggs to the anchor farm,” he said.
Jayiya added that the advantages of being part of eThekwini’s agri-business database included access to markets and incubation support services to improve the quality of the eggs through access to quality feed and hens.
