New life for Mozambican cabotage service

Mozambique’s stalled plans to provide a cabotage service linking the country’s ports have been given a new lease of life with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between stateowned Transmaritima and Peschaud Moçambique.

French company Peschaud is reported to be planning to invest US$10 million in vessels for the Mozambican service.

An efficient cabotage service will link the main economic centres of Mozambique by sea rather than road freight, which is frequently disrupted by flooding during the rainy season, and poor infrastructure.

Previous attempts to provide a cabotage service were sunk largely by the inability of the customs system to differentiate between sea freight that originated from outside the country, and that which had already been cleared but was being transported by ship.
