New initative addresses rail predictability issue

There are high hopes that
a new initiative to improve
tracking and the accuracy
of information between
TFR and the AP Moller-
Maersk lines will deliver
a more predictable and
seamless rail service.
Launched in January
this year, it is expected to
improve the movement of
containers on rail between
Durban and Gauteng.
According to Peter Andre,
Safmarine’s Gauteng
regional executive,
Safmarine customers using
the existing rail product
continue to experience
operational issues.
“The focus of this new
initiative – which represents
a partnership between
ourselves and TFR – has
been on finding ways to
continuously improve the
service,” says Andre.
“Safmarine has also
signed an internal service
level agreement with the
AP Moller-Maersk Group’s
intermodal department to
ensure its customers’ railrelated
queries are handled
in the most effective
manner,” he said.
Safmarine customers can
now access information
about their rail shipments
directly from the
intermodal department.
They no longer have to
wait for Safmarine sales or
customer service staff to
source the information
they need.
