The Border Management Authority (BMA), police and the South African Revenue Service (Sars) have seized a substantial consignment of illicit drugs and goods at the Oshoek Port of Entry.
According to the BMA, the joint-disciplinary team intercepted the goods when they stopped a truck during a search operation at 8pm on Monday. The truck was travelling from Eswatini into South Africa.
“A thorough inspection of the vehicle revealed 50 bags of dagga hidden in the trailer, weighing approximately 671.5 kilograms and carrying an estimated street value of R2.8 million. The same load also contained 916 illicit tyres,” the BMA said.
“The truck driver fled the scene during the interception and remains at large. Authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect.”
The BMA said the confiscated items were registered with the police for evidentiary purposes.
“Sars has seized the truck as part of the ongoing investigations, and a criminal case has been formally opened,” the authority said.
BMA commissioner Michael Masiapato commended the officials involved for their joint effort.
He reiterated the Port Management Committee’s commitment to strengthening border security and preventing the cross-border movement of illicit goods.
“The BMA will continue to work closely with its partners to intensify operations and ensure that those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice,” said Masiapato.
