Tanzania and Malawi have announced plans for a corridor development aimed at unlocking the wealth of Tanzania's south and providing Malawi with an alternate access to the sea.
The project calls for the expansion and modernisation of the southern natural harbour of Mtwara as a duty-free zone where goods could be processed and re-exported or stored and distributed.
The port will also serve northern Mozambique and Zambia. The Mtwara port project will cost an estimated US$1 billion in foreign direct investment, and involves an area of 200 acres. Berths will be increased from 3 to 5 and the quay lengthened by 800 metres. The plan calls for a 60-acres free processing zone next to the port and 260 acres nearby for commercial purposes. The project is being developed within the framework of the Southern Africa Development Community.
