A 10KM BYPASS road to be constructed in Botswana will eliminate one of the major problems facing the Walvis Bay Corridor Group's plan for an uninterrupted passage through that country along the TransKalahari Highway.
Currently vehicles travelling on the highway are sometimes prevented, when passing through Lobatse, from using a small stretch of the road near the South African border because it interferes with local traffic movements. The bypass will change that.
Botswana's ministry of works, transport and communications has called for tenders for the construction of the 10km section as well as a 16,6km Kanye bypass on the same route. The new two-lane bypass roads will include a new road-over-rail bridge at Lobatse, the construction of traffic junctions and circles, and the provision of lighting at the main intersections.
Site inspections are to be held on August 1 and the closing date for tenders is September 5. Finance for the works will come from savings gained from the loan provided by the African Development Bank for the Trans-Kgalagadi road project.
