THE MINING sector in the DRC is big business for many South African-based freight operations, with a new Gautengbased broker offering greater access to more remote parts of the region. “It is usually quite difficult to move cargo beyond Lubumbashi by road, but we offer services to Kolwezi in the north for the mining industry,” says Kevin Perumal of newly-formed brokers The Freight Office. The company specialises in cross-border road haulage, servicing the DRC, Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe. “We also offer world-wide air and sea freight services for a variety of goods moving in and out of South Africa. “Being a broker, we absorb and effectively manage the frustrations of the freight industry. Delays at the borders or in the ports really have an impact, which is why communication becomes important,” says Perumal. “If you don’t communicate hiccups to the client, each link in the supply chain will feel the pressure. “The freight and logistics industry has its pressures and challenges, but the key to survival is sound common sense and solid experience,” adds Perumal. “Without these the problem becomes that much bigger and the solution that much more difficult to apply.”
