New breath of life for Beira

A US$48-million project is set to keep the waterways of the port of Beira open – helping to re-establish the port as a gateway to central Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. Finance for the project has been provided by the Danish government development agency DANIDA. It is in the form of a 20% grant and 80% loan to the Mozambican government. The project began in July 2011, and will run until 2013. The dredging of the 22-kilometre access channel has breathed new life into the port, which is now attracting cargo away from Durban, Dar es Salaam and Maputo.
