A NEW national stevedore association has replaced local stevedore associations in the different SA ports. A spokesman for the National Stevedore Association of South Africa (NASASA) told FTW last week that the new organisation intends establishing links with government authorities and other organisations within the broader cargo handling industry. "This is to ensure that stevedores are consulted and have positive input whenever changes to legislation or current operating practices are being considered." Although NASASA remains voluntary, it is open to all companies involved with the physical handling of cargo and members can make use of the NASASA logo on their letterheads and stationery to show that they support and adhere to the standards set by NASASA.
