BRITISH AIRWAYS World Cargo has launched a new time-intense consignment system named Tail to Tail in which an intact unit will move through its London Heathrow hub with a minimum connecting time of six hours and a maximum of 24 hours.
It coincides with the completion of phase two of the new cargo centre at Heathrow, which cost R2,5billion, and also with the appointment of a new Africa area manager, Dave Shepherd. He will be based in London, but will make regular visits to this country.
Heads of affairs in the Johannesburg operation will be Richard Poulton, service delivery manager for Africa, and Salama Detlefsen, South African commercial manager.
With the completion of phase two at the Heathrow centre more than 50% of the airline's total cargo throughput at the airport is processed in the 800 000 tonnes capacity facility. Phase three, in which all loose shipments will move into the centre, is expected to be completed later this year.
Tying up with the Tail to Tail introduction, the airline has a competition running for southern African freight agents. A point is awarded for each unit destination, with bonus points available for bookings to certain destinations in the Middle East, Pacific region, USA and Canada, Europe and UK.
Bookings qualifying for the competition must be made seven days in advance and reconfirmed 48 hours before departure, and apply over and above permanent bookings.
The competition runs to September 30 with the winner earning a holiday abroad with British Airways.
