New airline plans Harare-Jo’burg service

Zimbabwe’s newest airline, Rainbow Airlines, plans to launch flights on August 26. It will fly the Harare-Johannesburg route already serviced by Flyafrica, South African Airways, British Airways Comair and Air Zimbabwe.

Andries Ntjane, deputy director of licensing and permits at the Department of Transport, said that the Department had accepted Rainbow’s application for designation to fly to South Africa, however the new airline had not yet been granted – or even applied for – a Foreign Operator’s Permit. “At the moment, it has been accepted to fly as a carrier from another country but we still need the Foreign Operator’s Permit – and we do not have this application,” he said.

The airline’s website also lists Cape Town, Victoria falls and Kariba among its destinations but the Civil Aviation Authority in Zimbabwe confirmed that Rainbow would only fly the Harare-Johannesburg route initially.
