NatCor line annual shutdown dates announced

The annual maintenance shutdown along the Natal Corridor (NatCor) railway line – stretching from Rietvlei in Gauteng to the port of Durban – is planned for July 14 to 23.

According to Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) spokesperson, Mike  Asefovitz, this is a planned shutdown of the line that takes place once a year to enable major maintenance of the rail infrastructure to be carried out.

On 18 July from 18:00 until  the same time on 21 July there will be a total shutdown which means no trains will be running during this period. On the alternate dates there will be a partial shutdown which will mean a reduced train service. Communication has been sent out to all affected customers as well as other stakeholders, said Asefovitz.

The maintenance activities will include all aspects of rail infrastructure, such as:
• Replacement of more than 40 000 sleepers
• Screening and cleaning of ballast
• Cleaning of drainage
• Maintenance of tunnels
• Maintenance of electrical components and systems
