Namibia, which has some of the best conditions in the world for power generation by wind and sun, has turned on the switch for investment by independent power producers.
This will create opportunities for project cargo service providers working through the ports in both Walvis Bay and Lüderitz Bay.
In his 2018 State of the Nation address, president Hage Geingob singled out the sector as part of the government’s efforts to promote economic growth.
“In this regard, it is encouraging to note that in 2017 the Development Bank of Namibia invested 720 million Namibian dollars in independent power producer projects,” he said.
According to USAid, Namibia at present uses mainly hydropower to generate electricity, but is reliant on imports (around 60% of the total electrical energy requirement) from Eskom and the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) for the remainder.
Projections are that electricity demand in Namibia is expected to rise and by 2035 will be more than double its current electricity consumption.
