Protesters torched two trucks and blocked the N2 southbound freeway near Chesterville in Durban on Sunday night.
Traffic came to a standstill on the N2 freeway at around 19:00 on Sunday night, according to reports on Durban security and traffic social media groups.
Protest action also spread to Booth and Cotswold roads in Cato Manor where angry residents allegedly stoned vehicles and blocked the roads with burning tyres.
According to the reports posted by motorists and security officials, protesters started setting pieces of wood alight in the left lane of the N2 southbound carriageway at around 18:30, and an hour later two trucks were torched and traffic brought to a standstill on the N2 freeway.
SAPS public order policing and metro police officers responded to the protest scene, according to the posts.
Metro Police spokesperson Boysie Zungu confirmed on Monday that a protest had occurred on the freeway. He said police were still assessing the extent of the damage. Traffic was flowing freely on both the north- and southbound carriageways of the N2 by 07:00 on Monday.
