MSC partnership in clinical purchase

Shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company SA (MSC) – through its wholly-owned subsidiary SAS Shipping Agency Services (SAS) – has acquired Mediclinic, a global private medical care provider.

A joint newly formed company owned by SAS and Remgro, Manta Bidco Limited, acquired the healthcare provider for about 3.7 billion pounds, an announcement from London said.

Remgro is a diversified investment company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) with investments in healthcare, consumer products, financial services, infrastructure, and industrial and media industries.  It has been a long-term supportive shareholder in Mediclinic, which is today regarded as the leading international healthcare services group.

MSC’s subsidiary SAS is involved globally in the shipping, terminals, logistics, and cruise sectors.

Each company will own 50% of Manta Bidco once the acquisition is completed.

Commenting on the acquisition, Diego Aponte, group president of MSC, said the company was delighted with its Remgro partnering for the Mediclinic acquisition.

“We have admired Mediclinic for some time and MSC is very well-placed to provide long-term capital, as well as our insight and experience operating a global business to support the strategic ambitions of the Mediclinic management team.

“We believe that alongside Remgro our ownership will provide Mediclinic with significant resources to the benefit of all Mediclinic’s stakeholders, including in particular its patients, employees, doctors and host governments,” Aponte said.

Chief executive officer of Remgro, Jannie Durand, concurred about the strength of the new consortium to enable Mediclinic to “undertake the investment required to execute on its strategy to realise the full potential of the business”.

Chair of Mediclinic, Dame Inga Beale, said the recommended offer represented a near-term value realisation for Mediclinic shareholders at an attractive premium.  Mediclinic has been operating for 39 years.
