Storm-ravaged Mozambique has set aside $313 million for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads in the provinces of Sofala, Zambezia and Nampula, specifically the latter two.
Repair work by the Ministry of Public Works will include the construction and reinforcement of bridges across the Save, Buzi and Mutivasse rivers.
In a document by the Annual Plan of Activities and Budget of the Road Fund, the government has revealed that 14 290 kilometres of road linkages are under reconstructive improvement in Zambezia and Nampula, important coastal areas linking the Port of Beira with the gas-rich exploration province of Cabo Delgado in the country’s north-eastern corner.
According to reports in Mozambique, the work is earmarked to undo the damage done by tropical storms Ana and Gombe that wreaked havoc across Zambezia and Nampula in particular, last January and March respectively.
The earmarked expenditure, totalling 20 billion in the local meticais currency, will be funded almost halfway through the public purse.
The Department of Public Works said it intended to raise nine billion meticais for the work through taxes, fuel levies and road tolls.
