Moves afoot to fill vacant CT customs post

The South African
Revenue Service (Sars)
is in the process of
recruiting a permanent
customs executive in Cape
Town.
Filling the position is
seen as a priority and a
senior technical expert
and manager has been
deployed to the city to act
as regional executive for
the customs portfolio in
the interim.
According to Sandile
Memela, Sars spokesman,
they are aware and
dealing with concerns
raised by Cape Town
industry about customs.
He said a survey
amongst stakeholders
by the South African
Association of Freight
Forwarders (Saaff)
had highlighted some
concerns with customs
operations in Cape Town.
“We have engaged with
the Saaff executive since
the survey was brought
to our attention and
have addressed all the
issues raised,” he said.
“We are committed to
ensuring that customs
capability is ref lective
of the requirements for
customs control. All
priority positions are
in the process of being
filled, while investment
continues in the
innovative use of tools
to supplement customs
capability.”
