More birdflu leads to further slaughter

RAY SMUTS SOUTH AFRICA can only apply for suspension of the European Union ban on the export of ostrich products once all farms in the country have been tested for the presence of avian (bird) flu. A second outbreak was detected during the first week of September on two neighbouring farms in the Salem area near Grahamstown - barely two weeks after ostrich authorities declared the virus disease had been eradicated - leading to the slaughter of 2 237 ostriches.
