MITSUI OSK Line made history recently when it became the first Pure Car Carrier (PCC) to load and offload three of its vessels in East London harbour on the same day. "It was very significant for us," says Lorraine Govender, MOL South Africa business development officer, attached to the automotive industry. "There have been three car carriers in on the same day before, but never from the same line." Pegasus Ace arrived to load DaimlerChrysler C-Class vehicles destined for Japan. Cosmos Venture arrived to discharge Mercedes Benz Sprinters for South African consumption and for transhipment to Australia and New Zealand. Pearl Ace, an MOL-owned vessel but on charter to another carrier, called on the same day to load vehicles. "The import and export of fully built up vehicles coupled with the import of contractual containerised cargo from Japan has made MOL South Africa one of the most active carriers in South Africa's motor industry," says Govender.
