Michaela Modinos pictured aboard the 6750 teu vessel which bears her name

Honour for local MSC manager THE LAUNCH of the 6750 teu MSC Michaela earlier this year struck a special chord for Mediterranean Shipping Company's Johannesburg director, Andrew Modinos. In the tradition of naming vessels after family of MSC staff, it bears the name of his daughter Michaela. MSC will take delivery of 16 of these vessels by August 2003. Each is as long as three football fields laid end to end and the height of a 20 storey building. The last decade has been one of dramatic growth for line. In 1992 its container capacity amounted to 30 700 teus. This has grown to 358 000 teus, making it the third biggest container shipping line in the world.
