Massive container conversion project for mining industry

Growing demand for shipping containers – particularly in the mining industry – has seen the recent installation of a major accommodation project for Vedanta Zinc International in the Gamsberg in the Northern Cape.

Prefabricated site accommodation supplier Speedspace completed the installation of the management camp which included 81 rooms with shared ablutions for management and 21 en-suite rooms for senior management.

“Containers are ideal to deliver total solutions to these sites – be it accommodation, offices or even storage space,” said Speedspace director Barron Charsley. Commenting on the Gamsberg project, he said Speedspace had established a management camp together with the camp service provider, Significant Site Services (SSS).

“Speedspace is responsible for the supply of comfortable customised modular accommodation units, while SSS takes care of the camp catering and facility management, including cleaning and laundry.”

He said the current camp was being expanded to include a further 28 management rooms and 12 senior management rooms. “The buildings are relocatable parkmore buildings built to sub-Saharan standards and fully insulated with 40 mm polyurethane sandwich panels.”
