Maputo invests in digital trade platform

Digitalisation is becoming an increasingly important part of project cargo logistics, as ports seek to improve coordination between the multiple parties involved in moving oversized and specialised cargo. Against this backdrop, the Port of Maputo has appointed Kale Logistics Solutions to implement Mozambique’s first Port Community System (PCS), another step in strengthening its position as a regional logistics hub. According to Osório Lucas, chief executive of the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), the PCS will create a smarter, more connected port ecosystem by enabling real-time collaboration and information sharing between stakeholders. “By enabling real-time collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders, we are strengthening the Port of Maputo’s role as a strategic gateway for regional and international trade,” he said. The PCS forms part of Mozambique’s broader digital transformation programme and will provide a single digital platform linking shipping lines, terminal operators, customs authorities, transport providers, warehouses and other stakeholders. It is expected to improve information sharing, automate processes and enhance visibility across the port’s operations. The system will support vessel management, import and export cargo, truck and rail movements, customs interactions, warehouse operations and performance monitoring, while integrating with existing digital platforms, including the Customs Single Window and terminal operating systems. Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, said the initiative was a key step in modernising the country’s logistics sector. “Digital transformation is no longer an option; it is a prerequisite for competitiveness,” he said. “As Mozambique’s first Port Community System, this initiative positions the Port of Maputo as a pioneer and lays the foundation for the digital evolution of our national logistics network.” Lucas said the platform would help prepare Mozambique’s logistics sector for the next generation of regional and international trade.
