The volume of manganese exported from the Northern Cape through Lüderitz Bay has doubled over the past financial year, according to Namport commercial executive Tino !Hanabeb. Some 204 301 tons of manganese was exported through Lüderitz Bay along the Trans-Oranje Corridor between September 2019 and March 31, 2020.Northern Cape mines are using the corridor because it is shorter than the routes to Port Elizabeth or Saldanha Bay, according to !Hanabeb. It is an initiative of TradePort Namibia. The first consignment was shipped in September 2019. This year Namport is geared up to ship 360 000 tons of manganese through the port of Lüderitz, which is a nearly 60% year-on-year increase in volumes, he says.
