Man on the run after staging a hijacking, arrested

Johannesburg - A man who has been on the run for more than a year after staging the hijacking of his truck carrying liquor valued at R1.5m has been arrested in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.

The 38-year-old man worked for a company which transported large consignments of liquor "collaborated with the bad guys", Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said.

The so-called hijacking took place in May last year.

Kgasago said metro police had received information that the man was attending a cultural event in Phomolong section, Tembisa on Sunday.

He was taken to the Tembisa police station and then handed over to the Germiston SA Police Service crime unit.

"With the suspect now in police custody, the authorities believe that the 2014 supposed to be hijacking case will be cracked and all the persons involved arrested," said Kgasago.
