Maersk helps shippers to save costs

Maersk Mozambique is working with shippers to help them reduce the cost of doing business in the region by optimising their logistics chains. “Mining companies, for example, can make significant savings if they use the same container that was used to carry chemicals and other supplies to ship out production from the mine,” says Michael Helweg, managing director of Maersk Line Mozambique. But, instead of using the same box and shipping line that brought in the supplies, they use a different box and often a separate service provider for exports. This adds unnecessary costs, according to Helweg. He and his team are focusing on optimising connectivity between the Mozambican ports of Maputo, Beira and Nacala and the hinterland. Maersk makes regular calls on all three ports through its M-Express service. Maersk Beira is working with its group offices in the region to educate cargo owners and shippers on how to save costs by going through the Mozambican ports. In some cases it is as simple as using the same container for imports and exports, and in others requires a fresh approach to the logistics of moving goods in the region.
