FTW pulls in transport sponsors
THANKS TO the generosity of the local freight industry, a batch of text books donated by a US publisher and valued at R40 000 will be distributed to underprivileged children in South Africa.
The 'knights in shining armour' are Lykes Lines which has agreed to carry the books on its seafreight service between the US and South Africa, and airfreight company Quantum International Services.
They were two of the many companies which reacted to an article in FTW (July 3, 1998) highlighting the need for a transport sponsor.
We've been overwhelmed by the response, Johannesburg attorney Nathan Mendelow told FTW. Mendelow is working with American professor Wayne Dudley of Salem State College to bring textbooks to this country.
This will help us to achieve our goal of bringing 2 million books to South Africa by the year 2000.
The recent donation excluded transport costs and because of high storaget costs the books would have been shredded if a transport sponsor was not found quickly.
