Lonrho buys agri-processing company

LONRHO HAS extended its African investment portfolio with the purchase of a 51% stake in an agri-processing and logistics company, the Rollex Group, for R40m. Rollex, which was established in 1989, sources, packs and delivers fresh fruit, vegetables and fish produce from across Africa to its retail clients, including Woolworths in South Africa and Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury, World Flowers, TFC Holland and Univeg in Europe. The company operates from a three hectare site, with international airside access to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The operations include 3000 m2 of cooled warehouse and cold room facilities for perishable produce and 1500 m2 for general storage warehousing and consolidation purposes. It also operates a fish export division situated at Cape Town International Airport. “This significant acquisition allows Lonrho to enter into the fast growing agri-processing market,” said Lonrho executive chairman David Lenigas.
