‘Logistics must facilitate growth of mining industry’

Increasing reliance on road transport is taking its toll on infrastructure, with conditions in Africa continuing to pose a major challenge to transporters, says Galbo Ismael, logistics manager of Mozambican-based Lalgy Transport. “We have our work cut out in maintaining road infrastructure to ensure the quick and secure transit of cargo across the various countries,” he told FTW. “And with more traffic on the roads, congestion has also become a major problem. “There is an urgent need for proper roads to be developed, built and maintained especially around the bigger cities and towns.” Ismael believes that cargo will continue to move by road in southern Africa for the foreseeable future. “Especially with the mining industry continuing to grow there are many opportunities for transporters as there is an urgent need for trucks that can move quickly and reliably to the various ports. We must ensure our network is able to ensure this.”
