Logistics major on ambitious growth path

Röhlig-Grindrod Logistics has aligned its growth plans with projected container handling capacity expansion at the Port of Durban.

“Handling capacity at the port is projected to grow from the current capacity of 3.2 million containers per year to 4.6 million per annum at the end of 2018,” said Rajen Chetty, branch manager: seafreight at Röhlig Grindrod Logistics in Durban.

He told FTW that the Port of Durban, as the “biggest and busiest in Africa”, was ideally located to help spur growth for the company but that there were “many challenges” that needed to be addressed. These include what Chetty describes as “constant port and traffic congestion”. “Furthermore, the misplacing of containers, short shipment of containers and moving out of vessel stacks is also not ideal for the industry.”

He said Röhlig was in “constant engagement” with the port authorities via industry bodies such as the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff) and the Durban Harbour Carriers’ Association.

“We are also making full use of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Spotlight application which enables us to track vessels and trucks on a 24-hour basis, thus enabling us to maintain our service levels to our customers,” said Chetty.
