Logistics alliances will drive the airlines of the future

IN THE last three years, the global airfreight industry has changed more than in the previous thirty years.
This was the feeling expressed by Wihelm Althen - former chairman, and now a supervisory board member of Lufthansa Cargo - in his acceptance speech as he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Hankuk Aviation University in Seoul, Korea, for his contributions to air cargo.
His address on the Future of the Airfreight Business dwelt on the rapid pace of change sweeping through the air cargo market.
Globalisation and information technology are now the main engines driving the world economy, Althen said. A leading role in the airfreight industry of the future will be attained only by those companies in the industry that are willing to utilise modern information technology instead of sticking to their traditional ways.
Those that get together to form sensible, global airline and logistics alliances, that are open to new initiatives and innovation, and firmly pursue change.
