Maersk Line has hiked its rates on the trade from SA to the Middle East and Indian subcontinent by US$100 (R972 at last Friday’s exchange rate) per TEU effective from August 1, according to the latest edition of the Journal of Commerce (JOC). Meanwhile, MSC said it would implement a rate increase on its Cheetah service from Asia to SA, Mozambique and East Africa. The hike, which will take effect from September 1, will be US$500 (R4 860) per TEU. This Maersk hike is just one of a series. The container line will also push up rates for shipments from the Far East to the west coast of South America, Central America and the Caribbean by US$100 per 20-foot container and US$1 000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container, starting August 15. Also, for trade between the east coast of South America, and Europe and the Middle East, the carrier will raise rates by US$300 per container, beginning September 1.
