Tailwind Shipping Lines, a shipping company owned by retailer Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, plans to reflag its entire fleet under the German flag, including vessels currently under construction.
The move was announced by Germany's Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and Ship Safety Service (DS). The first vessel to be reflagged was the container ship Panda 001, with a capacity of 5 527 TEU.
“The re-flagging of the Panda 001, from the Portuguese to the German flag, carried out in Barcelona, is just the beginning. The plan is to re-flag the entire fleet, including the newbuilds currently under construction,” BSH and DS said in a joint statement.
According to the agencies, the decision follows reforms to Germany's flag state administration in recent years. German Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder said the move came at a time of geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions.
BSH and DS said vessels operating under the German flag enabled authorities to work directly with shipping companies when goods needed to be transported to domestic ports.
Joachim Hillger, vice president of Tailwind Shipping Lines, said reforms had made the German registry easier for shipping companies to navigate.
For Tailwind, which was established in 2022, the choice of registry also provides access to support from Germany's diplomatic network abroad in the event of a crisis affecting vessels or crews. The company operates three container liner services linking Asia and Europe and providing intra-Europe shipping services.
Tailwind was founded by Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG in 2022. Lidl operates in 30 European countries.
