Lebombo border tightens security

Mpumalanga officials are gearing up for the festive season by deploying more police to the Lebombo border post with Mozambique. According to a provincial spokesman, police reservists will be working at the border post throughout December. This will be over and above the usual officers on duty. At least 40 reservists are needed a day as the gates will be open 24-hours a day. They will be helping with crowd control, ensuring proper queuing and the prevention of fights. Visas will be issued at the old Komatipoort airport before people cross the border. According to the province, some 160 000 people a day cross either to or from Mozambique during the festive season.
