Learn to live with weaker dollar

- Manuel ED RICHARDSON FINANCE MINISTER Trevor Manuel says South African exporters will have to learn to live with a stronger rand. Speaking in Cape Town at a three-day fashion Imbizo last week, he said “the world must adjust to the dollar’s inevitable fall”. The reason for a weaker dollar is that the economic fundamentals in the US economy are “out of sync”. “Unless we factor that into our thinking we are going to be looking for solutions in the wrong place. The dollar is depreciating and it is not going to go away,” he said. On calls for action against cheap Chinese imports, Manuel said that this would not solve the growing specialisation in world trade.
