THE RECENTLY opened Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) has finally been granted international status. This opens the way for international carriers to fly in directly or make onward calls from other South African airports. When KMIA was officially opened in September last year it included the ‘international’ tag in its official title, although this status had not been officially granted. While passenger traffic - in particular tourists - has been seen by the developers as the prime target of the airport, the booming mining, manufacturing and perishable foods industries in Mpumalanga province provide a lucrative source of cargo revenue.
