Kencargo builds on Nairobi hub

BUILDING ON the success of Kenya Airways' Nairobi - Lilongwe/Lusaka and Nairobi - Mwanza freighter services, Kencargo is planning to extend this by introducing a weekly Nairobi - Bujumbura/Kigali service. These services, in conjunction with Kenya Airways' B767 flights from Johannesburg to Nairobi, enable better connectivity for large shipments from South Africa. Kenya Airways has also upgraded its Nairobi - Mumbai capacity. On a same day hub transfer cargo spends 1,5 hours on the ground in Nairobi before departing for Mumbai. From Mumbai connections are available to Indian customs airports on Jet Airways. Kencargo's investment in communications and overall hub transfer operation has brought about a positive level of growth in transit cargo beyond Nairobi, says Maarten Klijnstra, regional sales manager for southern Africa. Presently 60% of South African exports transfer to Kenya Airways' network destinations beyond Nairobi, he says. These destinations are Lagos, Dubai, Mumbai, Bujumbura, Kigali, Dar Es Salaam, Mwanza, Entebbe, Addis Ababa, Khartoum, Cairo, Accra, Abidjan and Kinshasa.
