THE MANNER in which different organisations are able to come together to help the needy was borne out forcefully last week.
In a combined operation involving a number of roleplayers from the Department of Foreign Affairs, ABI Coca Cola, Spoornet, Unicorn's Unifeeder Line, Grindrod P&O Logistics, Eagle Freight forwarders and the South African Army, all played significant roles in supplying drinking water to water-ravaged Mozambique at no cost to the devastated country.
Three hundred and seventy tons of sparkling water packed in 2 litre bottles and donated by ABI was loaded into 20 containers under the supervision of Grindrod P&O Logistics at Maydon Wharf before being taken on board the Unifeeder coastal supply ship Umgeni, for free transportation to Beira.
The unusual cargo had earlier been railed at no charge to Durban by Spoornet, after which the army stepped in to provide the men to pack the 20 containers. Freight forwarding specialist Eagle Freight looked after the documentation side of things.
At Beira the water bottles were handed over to the Red Cross for distribution.
