Investment follows growth

As volumes in and out
of the Port of Durban
remain stable, CFR
Freight is continuing
to expand its operations as part
of a strategy to establish the
company’s reputation in the
ground handling, warehousing
and transport solution business,
according to Liza Allan,
seafreight branch manager of
CFR Freight in Durban.
She said the partnership
between CFR Freight and
ZacPak continued to work well,
not only in Durban, but across
the country.
“Investment in to our
operations
saw upgrades
in machinery
at the ZacPak
depot in
Durban during
2015,” said
Allan.
With growing
volumes, the
facility invested
in another
35-ton container handler as
well as more local container
haulage trucks. More staff has
also been brought on board.
There has for some time
been a focus on the FCL
cross-docking market and
March last year saw the
arrival of a new combi lift,
giving ZacPak the ability to
increase productivity and
turnaround of containers,”
said Allan.
The current port congestion
however remains a major
concern – in particular the
traffic on the roads in and out of
the ports.
“The
additional
capacity
that we have
created within
our Durban
operations
has allowed
us to keep up
with demand
and to ensure
truck movement. Extraordinary
growth has been seen in our
sea and airfreight export
movements in Durban.”
She said the approach by CFR
Freight to combine a “unique”
mix of operations under one
roof had allowed the business in
Durban to maintain economies
of scale.
“This has enabled us to
maintain our competitiveness in
the market place,” she said.
