Inland haulage specialist invests in major equipment upgrade

CONFRONTING THE challenges of an increasingly difficult transport environment, inland haulage specialist Rail Road Containers has embarked on an investment programme designed to enhance service levels and predictability. The Port Elizabeth branch has taken delivery of a Steelbro sidelifter trailer to facilitate the packing of containers which can now be placed on the ground at customers’ premises. For Durban customers the company has just added ten Mercedes Benz 2640 trucks to its fleet. “We realise we will still be faced with the challenges that everyone is facing – like queues into Durban Container Terminal – but the additional resources will help to mitigate delays,” director operations and marketing Sidney Ueckermann told FTW. “We’ve also seen the need to grow our local cartage trailer fleet, particularly in Durban, and have bought an additional nine trailers.” The upgrade programme will be ongoing, said Ueckermann, and next on the expansion list will be 20 new trucks for Johannesburg, due in March/April this year.
