Increased airport security delivers results

The implementation of an integrated multi-disciplinary tactical security plan at OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) – announced by the Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, just under a month ago – is “progressing well and showing some encouraging early results”.

Ortia spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler pointed to several arrests made at the airport over the past two weeks including “two significant arrests” made by Customs and Excise and the South African Police Service last Saturday for the attempted smuggling of narcotics.

“The strategic and operational support from the Ministries of Police, State Security, Transport and Home Affairs, as well as from the Ekurhuleni Metro and others, is proving instrumental in driving this results-oriented effort,” she said. Gunkel-Keuler confirmed in a statement that the two latest arrests involved insiders employed at groundhandling companies
