High courier licence costs will be reviewed

Leonard Neill THE PROPOSED high cost of courier operating licences in South Africa Ð up to R25 000 per company Ð will be reviewed as will other clauses which affect private operators and which are included in draft legislation before Government, says Sithembele Tiso, Department of Communications national manager, postal regulations. This follows a 'road show' undertaken by the department covering various regions of the country during October where all stakeholders were given the opportunity to voice concerns regarding the draft legislation. "The new regulations with amendments are to be placed before the Minister before the year's end, and will then be put forward for promulgation during the parliamentary session once this has opened in February next year," said Tiso. "The meetings have allowed the industry to come up with other suggested options. Some made it clear that the proposed licence fee was too high for the bulk of the industry to meet, so there might well be a change in that respect."
