Freight News’ holding company Now Media has called on its staff, readers and businesses to assist Kids Haven children's home in Benoni, which is struggling for survival while it awaits government funding.

Kids Haven, which has cared for 5135 children since 1992, issued a desperate cry for help and Now Media, including its staff and management, has responded to the call.

The home said in its latest newsletter that it has not, as yet, received its funding from the Department of Social Development and would greatly appreciate help with food and toiletries for this month as well as any cash donations to help meet the bills it is facing.

“This is a difficult request to make, even as we celebrate the work we are doing with young people this month. Kids Haven children's home has not received any funding from the Department of Social Development and we are struggling to cover our costs.  We need your help,” it said.

The home needs basic food items such as mielie meal, beans, rice, fruit, vegetables, soup (fresh, canned or dried), pasta, canned tomatoes, baked beans, lentils, pilchards, tuna, peanut butter, jam, long-life milk, oats, tea and stewing meat.

Donations can be dropped off at 34 Cranbourne Avenue, Benoni or Shop 24, Cramerview Shopping Centre, 277 Main Road, Bryanston.

Those who choose to make a cash donation can do so via the Kids Haven website or by making a deposit into the Kids Haven’s bank account: Nedbank 1948 063 824.

Contributions will help fund the Kids Haven InCare Programme which offers full residential care to children who no longer live with their families. Kids Haven is responsible for meeting all the children's needs while they live there.

The home protects and cares for children in crisis and empowers families, children and communities to build safe and caring spaces for all. Find out more at www.kidshaven.co.za.
