A STRATEGIC alliance just signed between Hellmann International Forwarding and the German Steinhoff Group is designed to strengthen the logistics muscle of both partners, according to Hellmann sales and marketing director David Black.
In its SA format, the alliance sees Steinhoff's Roadway operation acquiring and physically operating the Hellman Parcel Systems road distribution network around the country.
However, said Black, at the customer interface level, the name Hellmann Parcel Systems will remain - and it will continue to be part of our product range.
In return, Hellmann is busy devising an international logistics package which will cover the freight movement needs of the Steinhoff Group's wide-ranging local manufacturing interests - which include Gomma Gomma (making the group the country's largest furniture company, according to Black), Union Spinning and the Roadway operation.
We are looking at a whole spread of international involvements with Steihnhoff, Black added, which might also form a joint-venture forwarding entity.
