MORE HEAVY rains have closed the main road between Beira and Zimbabwe, with the port connected to the rest of Mozambique only by rail.
Zimbabwe road transporters report that trucks have been stranded in Mozambique for almost a week.
This has made the country's fuel situation even worse, said a Mutare operator. We have 20 fuel carriers of 30 000 litres each which have been unable to collect supplies at Beira for five days.
A new worry is that the road bridge over the Pungwe river might have been damaged. This is extremely serious, said one trucker.
Nothing definite has emerged yet but if the bridge is damaged that will cut down the flow of traffic drastically.
