The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called on the Department of Mineral Resources to visit a mine owned by PMG Mining in the Northern Cape following allegations of intimidation, harassment and assault by “heavily armed” security guards on its members at the mine.
According to a statement released by the union yesterday (Tuesday), a member was assaulted by the mine security last week and when a supervisor asked the mine manager why, he was suspended. The same worker then opened a case at a local police station and was subsequently fired.
“Employees have been working under a heavy guard of armed security with live ammunition,” said NUM Kimberley region health and safety chairperson, Mike Phiri.
NUM has also called on PMG to remove the armed security immediately as the area is not a “military zone”.
