Transporters are advised to proceed with caution in the Lichtenburg area after three trucks were torched earlier today.
The trucks were forced to stop after driving over nails strewn across roads by members of impoverished communities in the area.
Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, confirmed that the incidents seemed to be related to service delivery protests.
“People are stopping trucks, stealing what they can, and setting the trucks alight to destroy the evidence.
“It has nothing to do with the All Truck Driver Foundation,” he added, the organisation accused of violently disrupting the road freight sector because of their opposition to foreign nationals working as long-distance drivers in South Africa.
However, unconfirmed reports suggest that the protesters are rising up against the presence of foreign-owned businesses in the area.
Disgruntlement against the office of Lichtenburg’s mayor is also said to have led to the protests.
The trucks were set alight on Eerste Street and the R52 and R505 to Biesiesvlei and Ottosdal respectively.
