GROWTH IN developing economies could benefit the Cape, with its strategic position at the centre of South-South trade and in the middle of routes to West and East Africa. According to the 2007 Unctad Review of Maritime Transport, North–South trades and South–South trades are growing, a fact that reflects in the latter case the new geography of trade and the role of emerging developing economies as industrial centres. Total North–South trade in 2006 was estimated at 19.6 million teus.
