Freight operators are witnessing particular growth in pharmaceutical trade in Zimbabwe. Whilst some operators have told FTW of increased volumes to Zimbabwe from South Africa, volumes out of the country are also picking up. According to Alwyn Rautenbach, executive manager of Airlink Cargo, this was one of the trends in the last quarter of 2018. “We started to see small volumes of pharmaceutical goods moving from Zimbabwe to Botswana in particular,” he said. “We are hoping to see more of these products moving in 2019.” Rautenbach said he believed there was potential in Zimbabwe despite the major economic challenges it faced. “The current economic constraints are making trading challenging, however despite all of that we are staying positive that things will change for the better,” he said. Working with local businesses to ensure that invoices were settled locally was possible – and one way of securing payment, he said. This is in light of the ongoing forex challenges in the country.
