IT MAY sound enough to have any seagoing creature turn turtle, but two loggerheads are to travel by ship from Durban to Mauritius before being released into the Indian Ocean - and expected to swim back home!
As part of on-going research into movements of sea turtles, Grindrod International Freight Wildlife Re-location unit arranged for the two to be crated and loaded onto the Indian Ocean Lines' vessel Magdeburg which sailed from Durban last week. Accompanying them was warden George Nair of the Natal Parks Board.
The turtles will be released on either side of Mauritius as the vessel sails on its route to Reunion and Port Louis.
Back home Professor Floriano Papi will follow their course with the assistance of satellite transmitters fitted to them as part of a migration tracking project to record their movements and distances travelled daily.
Grindrod does its bit for turtle research
